November 2011

Dear Reader,

My first adventure in novel co-writing, Forbidden, debuts on January 24, 2012!

The book’s about a 16-year-old girl whose life begins to implode when she comes into unusual powers—only to discover that her entire existence is prohibited—as is her relationship with the new boy at school, who is far more than he seems. A blend of wit, pop-culture, and paranormal romance, Forbidden will appeal to readers of any age or genre–or any gender!

Forbidden is praised by Kirkus Reviews for its "quite effective paranormal suspense and intense-but-quixotic high-school romance," described by Beneath the Cover as "amazing... an addictive read," and by Sophie Jordan, author of Firelight, as "beautifully written! Romantic and filled with delicious tension. Forbidden enchants!"

I wrote the novel with my son, Ryan James, and the entire creative experience has been wonderful. Visit Ryan’s website or mine to check out a Q & A with me & Ryan, and to read an excerpt from Forbidden.

We are starting a Pre-Order Campaign for the book, with prizes! Pre-order Forbidden from any bookstore, email Syrie at with proof of purchase (copy of receipt) and PRE-ORDER CAMPAIGN in the subject line, and for each copy you order, you’ll be entered into a contest to win some special Forbidden swag. The more copies you order, the more times your name will be dropped into the hat! Contest closes Jan. 23, 2012.

If you’d like to give Forbidden as a holiday gift, here’s a handy way to make that happen: simply pre-order the novel at the bookseller of your choice, then download this “Forbidden I.O.U. Gift Card” which you can print out, personalize, and wrap or mail to your giftee.

Want to receive Forbidden as a holiday gift? Just put it on your Wish List, with a link to this web page!

All of Syrie’s books make wonderful gifts! (And you know you’d rather give your friends and family a book than another sweater or socks, right?) Check out this cool holiday ad from Vanguard Press, featuring Nocturne.

The paperback edition of Nocturne came out in August, it’s been selling well, and racking up great reviews. Here’s one male reader’s 5-star take on the novel and its eye-catching cover (it seems that real men do read romance!)
I was thrilled to contribute a short story to the anthology Jane Austen Made Me Do It (Ballantine, October 2011.) The brainchild of Laurel Ann Nattress, editor of, the book is a collection of 22 original new tales by Austen fan fiction writers, all bound together in one glorious volume, and it’s smart, witty, and tons of fun.

The Jane Austen Made Me Do It book launch party in Ft. Worth, Texas on Oct. 15 was a great success. Here I am with author Stephanie Barron at the book signing. See more photos and read all about the event here.
Speaking of Ft. Worth, that’s where the JASNA (Jane Austen Society of North America)  Annual General Meeting was held this year in October, and as always, it was a true delight. More than 600 Janeites attended the 5-day Austen extravaganza. It was such fun connecting with friends, meeting readers, learning about All Things Regency, and dancing with my husband Bill at the Ball! See more photos here.

The highlight of the year was the wedding on August 13 of our son Jeff and his beautiful bride, Yakun! It was a magical, unforgettable day.

As always, I am grateful for your support and appreciate your interest in my work. I would love to hear from you. Please follow me on facebook and twitter, and feel free to email me or leave a message in my website guest book! Thanks again, and happy holidays!

All best wishes,

Syrie James
