April 2010

Hello and welcome to the Syrie James Newsletter!

Since April is my birth month and the beginning of spring, it seemed the perfect time of year to launch the first edition of my newsletter.  I’m delighted to have this opportunity to share the latest news about my books.

Dracula, My Love Due Out This Summer

I’m excited to announce that my next novel, Dracula, My Love: The Secret Journals of Mina Harker, comes out on July 20.  A tale of adventure and forbidden passion, the book approaches Bram Stoker's Victorian classic Dracula with a brand new perspective, revealing the untold story of Mina Harker’s scandalous, secret love affair with young and handsome Count Dracula—the most powerful vampire of them all.

Although everyone Mina knows fears Dracula and is pledged to destroy him, she sees a side to him that the others cannot: a tender, romantic side; a man who’s awakened feelings in her she has never before imagined; a man who's taken full advantage of his gift of immortality to expand his mind and talents; a man who is deeply in love, and who may not be evil after all.  Yet to surrender is surely madness, for to be with him could end her life.

I have to admit, I fell madly in love with both Mina and Dracula as I was writing this book!  I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this new take on the story, filling in the voids that Stoker created, answering all the unanswered questions, and inventing Mina’s own personal history, which had never been revealed before.  My editor at HarperCollins, Lucia Macro, was so happy with the manuscript that she didn’t ask for a single revision.  So far, the book is being translated into seven foreign languages.

The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Brontë is a Barnes & Noble “Buy 2-Get One Free” Book in April!

Barnes and Noble is featuring Secret Diaries front and center this month on the “3 for 2” table in stores nationwide.  If you haven’t already gotten a copy, or have considered giving one as a gift, now’s the perfect time.  I am truly honored that, out of all the books in the country, Secret Diaries was chosen as a Great Group Read of 2009 by the Women’s National Book Association.  To my delight, the book has gotten some wonderful reviews, and I’ve been getting heartwarming feedback from readers all over the world.

The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Brontë has been optioned for film

The film rights to The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Brontë have been optioned by Cool Hand Entertainment, a British production company.
They are currently seeking financing and hope to turn the book into a major UK/US theatrical film with me attached to write the screenplay.
The romantic drama, set on the wild and windy Yorkshire moors, will recount the story of Charlotte Brontë’s turbulent relationship with Irishman Arthur Bell Nicholls, and her journey to becoming the famous author of Jane Eyre.

Other Book News

For the past six months, I’ve had the pleasure of co-writing a young adult novel with my son Ryan.  We’ve just completed the book and are very excited about it.  I’m now working on a darkly exciting romantic novella for Vanguard Press entitled Nocturne, slated for release on Valentine’s day 2011.  Further details about both books will be forthcoming in the next edition of my newsletter.

On a personal note…

…life is good, and every day I give thanks for my wonderful, supportive, and loving husband and family.  I wish everyone a very happy spring!
